An Italian Lady Goes To The Bronx $28.09 An extraordinary ethnographic study that sets its sights on the de-bronxification of daily life. After her children leave for college, an Italian woman who has lived for years in New York City, and who formerly taught the “The Art of Listening” at a University in Mi-lan, decides to explore the South Bronx. She wanted to see for herself how people live and think “on the other side of the barricade.” And one fine morning, flaunting the ad-vice and concerns of friends and colleagues, she donned her brightest clothes and em-barked upon her mission. In the three months spent in one of the most notorious zones of America’s urban disaster – where Fort Apache, the Bronx was filmed in the 1970s, starring Paul Newman – she collected a wealth of material on the positive, construc-tive forces at work in the Bronx: the new urban pioneers. The book, which sites itself at the crossroads of the new journalism and urban ethnography, recounts the encounters and clashes between the author, her culture, and her expectations and her various personalities who guide her through the realities of daily life in the Bronx. Marianella Sclavi follows these persons throughout the course of their daily lives (she speaks of “shadowing” them), entering homes, school rooms, a courthouse, a union headquarters, and various churches and associations that host the meetings of committees doing battle for decent housing and the rebirth of urban community. And while doing so, she elaborates what she calls a “humor-based methodology for city planners, teachers, sociologists and administrators.” |

Children & Disasters $46.51 When disaster strikes, survivors suddenly find themselves in a world that has become confusing and unfamiliar. Such traumatic events impose severe psychological strain on every member of a community, but children are a particularly vulnerable group requiring special attention. Children and Disasters addresses the needs of this specific population by examining the impact of major disasters on the mental health and emotional functioning of children. The programs described in this book are designed to provide early intervention to children and families undergoing stress reactions to a catastrophic event. The authors offer interventions aimed at enhancing the skills of mental health professionals, educators, and peer counselors in responding to the intensified demands of disasters. These intervention approaches provide information regarding the event itself, reinforce the legitimacy of the anxieties and fears that children and their families are experiencing, and encourage the expression of feelings in group and individual settings (for the younger child, through drawing and play). Furthermore, they build on the coping capacity of individuals and theirs families and provide concrete coping skills and techniques to alleviate stress reactions. The intervention model can be applied to programs for individual children and their families, multi-family groups, and groups for children in mental health, educational, and community settings. The practical hands-on approach to program design makes this book an attractive resource for mental health professionals, social workers, rehabilitation specialists, professional and volunteer counselors, and suicide intervention workers. It will also beuseful for school personnel, including teachers, school counselors, and administrators, as well as federal and state emergency planners and coordinators. |

Cognition, Education, and Communication Technology $42.41 Cognition, Education, and Communication Technology presents some of the recent theoretical developments in the cognitive and educational sciences and implications for the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in the organization of school and university education. Internationally renowned researchers present theoretical perspectives with proposals for and evaluations of educational practices. Each chapter discusses different aspects of the use of ICT in education, including:*the role of perceptual processes in learning;*external cognition as support for interactive learning;*the role of meta-cognition;*simulation learning environments as cognitive tools;*the role of science controversy for knowledge integration;*the use of ICT in the development of educators; and*the role of narratives in education.ICT has great potential for revolutionizing education. Large investments of resources are being made, often without a strong understanding of how ICT will or should be implemented. The expectation is that students will show immediate improvements in terms of their motivation to learn and their learning achievements, but reality is different. Progress of ICT in education requires more than just computers in the classroom. It demands an understanding of the complex processes contributing to human learning and how they interact with new technologies. This text provides theoretical perspectives on the learning processes that can be used as a foundation for constructing pedagogically valuable tools based on ICT.The combination of results—from cognitive science and pedagogy, with more practically oriented suggestions for how ICT can be used in various forms of education—makes this book suitable for researchers and students in the cognitive and educational sciences, as well as for practitioners and planners of education. |

Corporate Level Strategy $2.52 “A vital and deeply researched contribution to thinking about corporate strategy.” -Professor Gary Hamel London Business School This groundbreaking book on corporate-level strategy is the fruit of ten years of consulting and research with corporations in North America, Europe, and Japan. Michael Goold, Andrew Campbell, and Marcus Alexander have focused on the question of how parent companies create-or destroy-value in the businesses making up their organizations. They propose a new approach to the management of multibusiness companies, based on the goal of “parenting advantage”: being the best parent for each of the businesses in the corporate portfolio. Multibusiness corporations around the globe are grappling with fundamental questions about what businesses their companies should be in, and how they should structure and influence their businesses. For many companies, restructuring and divestitures seem to be the sensible solution. But the authors of Corporate-Level Strategy show that size and diversity are not necessarily problems. More often than not, the fatal flaw is not the range of businesses in the portfolio, but the lack of a corporate strategy that will add any value to them. Corporate-Level Strategy arms senior managers and corporate planners with a set of proven strategic principles and clear guidelines for successfully managing a diverse, multibusiness company. Citing lessons learned from their experiences at companies such as Emerson, 3M, and GE in the USA; Canon in Japan; BTR, Shell, and Unilever in Europe; and a host of other prominent multibusiness organizations around the world, the authors demonstrate that developing a clear corporate-level strategy to achieve parenting advantage is essential to the successful management of a multibusiness corporation. They show how and why corporate strategy differs from business unit strategy, why parents often inadvertently destroy value through their influence, and what the ingredients of a successful, |

Education for All and Multigrade Teaching $81.18 Multigrade teaching poses a challenge to learning. Millions of learners worldwide are taught by teachers who, at any one time, are responsible for two or more school grades/years. These are the invisible multigrade teachers who struggle to provide learning opportunities for all within curriculum and teacher education systems designed for monograded classes. In many countries multigraded classes arise out of necessity and are regarded as second class education. Yet in some parts of the world learning and teaching in multigraded settings is embraced as the pedagogy of choice, offering equivalent, and sometimes superior, learning opportunities. Multigrade teaching provides an opportunity for improved learning. This book is based on original research on challenges and opportunities in Colombia, England, Ghana, Malawi, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Peru, Turks and Caicos Islands and Vietnam. Its purpose is to raise awareness among educational policymakers and practitioners worldwide of the realities of multigrade classes in the context of Education for All, and to explore the implications for teachers, teacher educators, curriculum developers and educational planners. |

The authors present an analysis of how our knowledge can be utilized in the design and planning of settings better suited to human needs. Of interest to psychologists, geographers, and environmental designers, Environment, Cognition, and Action examines the dynamic interplay of assessment, knowledge, and action of people in all settings relevant to daily life — home, school, office and industry. |

Exploring Community Engagement $69.99 The White Paper on Higher Education (1997), urged Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in South Africa to avail their expertise and infrastructure for community engagement initiatives in the interests of demonstrating social responsibility and a commitment to the development of communities (Council on Higher Education, 2006). This research monograph is based on a response from the University of the Free State (UFS) in enhancing community engagement via a specific support initiative in previously disadvantaged schools in the Free State province of South Africa. Furthermore, the quality of teaching and learning at the UFS-Volksblad Spring school in which 244 learners participated are discussed whilst the UFS Chief Directorate Community Service’s “value-added” intervention in which 130 sponsored learners participated, is also highlighted. The research findings and recommendations of this community research monograph give impetus in supporting lecturers, educators, teacher unions and curriculum planners in structuring future school-based support initiatives. |
